We have to get real, if immigration is TAKEN instead of a process done as it is for those not in proximity to our border, it is unfair to the rest of the world. Why not provide the nations that are struggling just as horridly or more (because of wars, religious persecution, widespread terminal famine, disease) the same opportunity by sending ships to bring them here. At least that would allow them equal opportunity with the people coming here illegally.
From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States
As of 2006[22], California had 2,830,000 illegal aliens, or 25% of the total. [That equals 11, 320,000 MORE people in our society!]
A total of 64,487,615 citizens (not counting the 200x immigrants, which if you multiply the 2 yr total x 4 as an estimate = 4,209,660] in a country of 303,848,868 people (from http://www.census.gov/population/www/popclockus.html). Or almost 22% (one in five) people in this country who are new citizens. With the immigrants from 200x, that percent is 68,697,275/303,848,868*100=23%, close to one in four.) THAT IS A HUGE NUMBER FOLKS!!
Why not ask the legal immigrants from those countries what they feel about protecting our borders? Their people desperately need places to take in society - and that hope should not be taken away.
Personally, I think it'd be good to shut all immigration off for everyone - not to be unkind, but to allow an assimilation period of no immigration - which hasn't happened since the 60's. We need to allow the exponentially growing new population the ability to blend into society and together become one nation.
The result because we haven't? Towns that look like 3rd world countries where in the past they were beautiful and safe spots. Children carrying weapons to protect themselves from the gangs that have taken over schools. Pockets of races that fight. People who want to preserve individual cultures and languages, and who get preferences, a thing that was unheard of for the Germans, Irish, Polish, Italian, Portugese, Spaniard, Swedish, English, Dutch, Canadian, French, Asian, and many other races that came here from foreign lands to be American. The rest of society is seen as "white" or as different when clearly we are many nationalities and not different, just in the timeframe we came to this country.
Let's be honest. Something isn't working here.
